A PC running too hot shows clear warning signs before it fails. Catching thermal problems early prevents performance loss, system instability, and potentially expensive component damage.

Performance drops during gaming — this is thermal throttling. The GPU or CPU is reducing performance to manage heat. Frame rates that are stable for the first 10 minutes then drop significantly suggest throttling.
Unexpected shutdowns during gaming — thermal protection shutting the system down before damage occurs.
Fan noise that is constant and loud even at desktop — fans spinning at maximum speed trying to dissipate heat that is not being removed adequately.
Blue screen errors or driver crashes under gaming load after 20 or more minutes of use.

Normal Temperature Ranges
CPU at idle — under 45 degrees Celsius.
CPU under gaming load — 55 to 75 degrees Celsius.
GPU at idle — 30 to 50 degrees Celsius.
GPU under gaming load — 65 to 85 degrees Celsius.
Fixes in Order of Simplicity
1. Clean the PC — dust buildup causes the majority of gradual temperature increases. 20 minutes with an electric air duster can recover 5 to 15 degrees Celsius.
2. Check fan directions — verify intake fans blow air in and exhaust fans pull air out.
3. Add an exhaust fan — a case with only intake fans has nowhere to send the hot air.
4. Undervolt the GPU — reduces heat output without performance loss.
5. Re-paste the CPU or GPU if the system is 3 or more years old. Best paste options: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Arctic MX-6.
6. Improve room cooling — a small portable AC unit or window exhaust fan changes the ambient temperature equation more than any case fan configuration.
