GPU Undervolting Guide — Run Cooler and Quieter for Free

Undervolting is the most impactful free tool in any thermal management arsenal. Less voltage means less power consumption, which means less heat at the same performance level.

What You Need

  • MSI Afterburner — free, works on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs
  • GPU-Z or HWMonitor — for temperature monitoring
  • FurMark or a demanding game — for stability testing

Step 1 — Baseline Your GPU

Run a demanding game for 15 to 20 minutes. Note your peak GPU temperature, average clock speed under load, and power consumption in Afterburner. These are your comparison numbers.

Step 2 — Open the Voltage Frequency Curve

Open MSI Afterburner and press Ctrl+F. This opens the Voltage/Frequency Curve editor mapping voltage on the X axis to clock speed on the Y axis.

Step 3 — Apply Your Undervolt

Find the dot corresponding to your target clock speed. Drag it left to lower voltage by 50 to 100mV. Select all dots to the right and drag them down to your target frequency. Click Apply and Save.

Step 4 — Stability Test

Run a 20 to 30 minute benchmark. Driver crashes mean voltage is too low — go back up 25mV. Stable temperatures mean your undervolt is working. Keep pushing down 25mV at a time until you find the limit, then back up one step.
