TDP stands for Thermal Design Power. It is the maximum amount of heat a cooling system must be able to dissipate for the component to operate within its temperature limits. In practice TDP has become shorthand for how much power a component draws.

TDP Definition — What the Number Actually Means

When NVIDIA lists the RTX 4070 Super TDP as 220 watts that means the cooling system paired with this GPU must be able to dissipate 220 watts of heat continuously. In practice this means the GPU draws approximately 220 watts of power at sustained full load — because nearly all electrical energy consumed by the GPU eventually becomes heat.

Why TDP Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Modern GPUs with power limit adjustment features regularly exceed their rated TDP at boost frequencies before pulling back. An RTX 4090 rated at 450 watts TDP can spike to 600 watts briefly during boost. In mining operations I monitored actual power draw at the wall rather than relying on TDP specifications to understand real system power requirements.

How TDP Affects Your PSU Choice
